Delta-Blues Riff with Low E Pedal: Video 3
Here's the first ending for this Delta Blues riff. It's a typical melodic downward motion from the tonic chord (E) to its dominant chord (B7). The walkdown also breaks the pattern of the synchronized low E pedal up to this point. The low E now separated rhythmically from the upper structure by falling on the quarter note down beats while the upper melodic line accentuates the upbeats.More videos at https://www.honoluluguitarlessons.net/media
Delta-Blues Riff with Low E Pedal: Video 2
This is the second part of four videos. I talk about how to play the second phrase of this Delta Blues style riff and how it combines minor and major blues tonalities. The dynamic balance between the upper line and the low bass pedal on E is so vital and inflections through the use of hammer-ons spice things up nicely.More videos at https://www.honoluluguitarlessons.net...
Beginning Ukulele: Posture & Great Habits
The sooner you cultivate great technique, good posture and good habits, the easier ukulele playing will be down the road. In this video, I talk about what the left hand is supposed to be doing, what the right hand’s posture and angle should be at, while also thinking about relaxing your shoulders. Doing this preparatory, chromatic picking and finger exercise slowly is very much like learning martial arts in slow motion. If done slowly, you will notice it getting easier, more natural and automatic every day.
Work it! It makes everything after that much easier, much more natural.

Delta-Blues Riff with Low E Pedal
This Delta-blues style riff uses both minor and major tonalities and keeps the low E string pedaling with every accent of the upper melodic line. The key to making this ditty groove properly is to make sure that this low E string is played just as loudly compared with the upper structure.
The walk-down that is so idiosyncratic in Blues cadences breaks this rhythmic alliance, however, by switching to a somewhat contrapuntal role. And I think that this part at the end of the riff is what makes it so groovy and interesting, so fresh!?
Robert Johnson all over this!
With a little bug
Having some fun with an 'entomological' classic by putting a bit of a different spin on it. Funky blues riffs and a really fun tag to jam on could turn this into an endless jam - and I briefly had the itch to turn on the looper pedal but decided to keep this short and sweet.
Winter-Summer-Time
Because it's winter time in Hawaii and because it's the time that I appreciate my geographic disposition the most, now is my favorite time to play 'Summertime'.
It's fun to put a bit of a Dorian spin on things with blues and bebop lines mixed in. 'Summertime' is probably the most overplayed standard out there. But experiencing and amazing stage performance of Porgy & Bess a few years ago really made me love the piece again.
The Gershwins were an amazing team!
